Tips and Tricks Tuesday: Promoting on Facebook

Facebook is a powerful tool for promoting your Etsy shop. If you haven't already, take a few minutes to create a "PAGE" for your business.

A page for your business is separate from your personal Facebook page. In fact, Facebook recently made some updates to the "pages" feature which allow you to receive notifications and post on Facebook as your business identity instead of just as your personal identity. (A major improvement for privacy and clarity, in my opinion). Instead of "friending" you personally, people "like" your business and can follow your business posts. For example, you can post photos of your products, post links to your listings, post special sales and coupon codes, etc.

Here are some examples of Facebook pages belonging to our EtsyNEAT members:

How do you create a page for your business?

It's very simple. Follow this link: Create a page. The first three choices are "Local Business", "Company", and "Brand or Product". Choose the one that is most appropriate for your business and you will be prompted to select a sub-descriptor from a list.

Facebook provides links to help you set up your page-- I recommend that you follow all of them. You will want to have some PHOTOS selected for your page.

How do you get people to "like" your page?

Inviting your friends and family to "like" your page is the first step to developing fans.

Post your Facebook link as a comment on this blog post, as well as to any team forums in which you participate.

Cross-promote by including your Facebook link in your Etsy profile, your Twitter account, and in your blog (if you have one).

You can also purchase targeted ads which will appear on the side of certain user's Facebook pages. User "elgarbo" posted a thread in the Etsy forums about how to use Facebook ads-- It's very informative. Read the thread here.

Once you create your own Facebook page, don't forget to "like" our EtsyNeat Facebook page using your new Facebook identity! And post your link here too, of course!

  1. Excellent tip!!

I have a personal FB page and of course a "fan" page for my business stuff. I personally keep everything separate.

  3. I've just recently set up my business page. My only frustration is that it seems they haven't worked out all the bugs yet. You're supposed to be able to "like" other pages when you're using FB as your own page, but right now I'm unable to do it. Boo!

  4. The "like" feature has worked fine for me a couple of times, then other times it hasn't. I think they are working out bugs-- it's going "global" on March 1st.

  5. Great post, very helpful! Also, for anyone who uses twitter there's a new feature that posts your feed from the business page to your twitter feed. It's nice for me because I always forget to update my twitter. Oh and my FB page is: www.facebook.com/stitchpleasemd
